FIVE STARS!!! This retelling of Huckleberry Finn from Jim's perspective was a masterpiece! Instant classic. Everett gave agency to the enslaved James (his chosen name) where the world pushed to strip it from him wherever possible. The story demonstrated the still very much current requirement to code-switch that so many Black people in America feel compelled to do. I never felt a need to re-read Huckleberry Finn but I know I'll revisit James again and again.

A cathartic read after reading Huckleberry Finn and being so frustrated by it and the lack of anyone REALLY truly acknowledging the horrors of slavery. Despite this, there’s still humor and adventure in this book, similar to the type of humor in Huck Finn. It starts off following the original story quite faithfully and at a certain point diverges in a way that I really appreciated (the ending of Huck Finn was the worst part in my opinion for multiple reasons).

I recommend this book to everyone, but especially to anyone who’s read The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

An amazing reinventing of a classic, a sophisticated update and an emotional thrill ride. I laughed, I was enraged, I laughed some more, I cried, I cheered; and I struggled to step away from the adventure, the mystery and the word play!
