I love tana French and this book did not disappoint.   I amthrilled to see that the main character is going to return.

3.5 (Goodreads it's 2022, give us half-star options). Solid mystery, really takes its time for better (some A+ scene-setting in rural Ireland) and worse (takes a while to get going and I'm not sure the length is totally justified by the story).

Not my typical mystery! For me, this read was less about twists and turns and more about a man adjusting to the calm Irish countryside. I personally prefer a mystery with twists and turns, but I appreciated the heart. And there was one good shock in there for me!

Good, but I could not care less about children in books. Tana French is a great writer, as always, but the focus on the local kid - who is obnoxious - makes me like it less.

Cal Hooper is freshly retired from his long career as a police officer and has relocated to a small town in Ireland. He's looking forward to peace and relaxation, but Trey- a local, quiet teen- is looking for Cal's help in finding their brother, Brendan. Tana French is one of my favorite authors and while The Likeness still reigns as my favorite of her novels, I really liked this newest release. Trey and Lena were my favorites, but Cal and his moral compass were somehow comforting to me. This did not, however, ease the itch I've been having recently to run away and move to a small town in another country! The ending wasn't a major surprise, but there was a nice little twist thrown in there.

A new Tana French novel! I hadn't seen this one before, so I picked it up at the airport. I was so excited to read it on my trip. Which ... I did, but it was disappointing. It's not the same Dublin Murder Squad and has an entirely different feel to it. And I didn't entirely like it. Unlike the rest of her novels, this one went into my donate pile instead of onto my bookshelf.

It hasn't been that long since I finished this book -- about 2.5 months -- and already at first when I sat down to write this review I thought "what the hell was this about again?" I couldn't even remember a vague plot line. Now that I've been thinking about it for a bit it's coming back to me... American dude buys a home in the middle of nowhere Ireland, annoying neighbors trying to hook him up with a strong-willed lady friend while also keeping him at arms length about town gossip, kid who turns out to be full of surprised befriends him to try to find a missing teenager ... but I suspect in a few more months I won't even remember I read it.
