As a lifetime fan of Steve Young (from his days at BYU through his time with the 49ers), I loved this book! It gave me such an appreciation for Steve and I respect him more now than ever before.

I watched every single 49ers game that Steve Young started, and he's always been one of my favorite athletes of all-time, so I was excited to read his autobiography. Mostly, it's really good especially if, like me, you want to relive so many of those games and teams. (And to share in Young's thinking that the team should have won even MORE Super Bowls than they did.) The book itself veers a LOT into Young's faith - he's Mormon, and the great-great-great-great grandson (I think I got that right) of Brigham Young himself. That shouldn't be surprising and in a book designed to know more about the man, it's appropriate as well - but it was a bit more than I would have liked. Still, I learned a great deal about a guy I thought I knew (for instance, that he suffered from crippling anxiety for most of his playing career) and it's well worth a read for anyone trying to learn about someone achieving success in the face of obstacles as well as football and 49er fans specifically.

Wow! First off, what woman has not been in love with Steve Young since playing for BYU, 49ers, and winning the Super Bowl?? I loved reading this book and learning so much more about football legend, Steve Young. This was a book that I could not put down. I truly enjoyed learning more about his football career and the obstacles he had to overcome in football to become who he is today. Every injury, every game played, every play that was called, etc. I felt like I learned so much more about football, the game, the players, the coaches, etc. Also reading about the relationships he developed with his teammates and his coaches.

However, I loved learning about the other side of Steve Young. His vulnerabilities, insecurities, anxiety issues, and his involvement in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. This is a man who knew he was good at something from the time he was a child and knew he wanted to play college and pro football but came to the humbling conclusion that he would have to overcome some adversities to become the man he wanted to be. On and off the field. He wanted to see how good he could be and wanted to push himself to greatness, but also learned he needed to pray and put his faith in the Lord. He had so many desires in his life, and from reading this book, I can see that he learned to have patience and faith.

Steve Young is a truly upstanding guy. A pro athlete making millions of dollars and yet as humble as ever. Someone who was constantly in the media, yet stood faithful to his religious beliefs and values.

I’m not a football person at all. I don’t understand the game or anything about it. I’ve never watched a Super Bowl in my life. This book gave me an inside look at the life of a pro football player. Steve Young went through a lot to get to where he is now. I have more respect for football. Still don’t understand it but this was a good read. I didn’t expect it to be goo but it was. I also learned that I’m okay being single at 27. Steve Young was 36 before he got married and now head 4 kids. There is hope.

The Value of a Star: Ratings Explained

This was a surprise!

I've had NFL great Steve Young's biography sitting in my Audible Library for a while, but always found a reason to skip it. I generally opt for fiction over reality in my books! But it spoke to me this month, so instead of skipping over it again I opened it up, gave it a listen...

...and was hooked after the first chapter!

I had SO much fun reading football story after football story. From high school running back in Connecticut to 8th string Quarterback at BYU; from learning under future great Jim McMahon at BYU to backing up current great Joe Montana; from winning the Super Bowl with the 49ers, to retirement and everything in between--this book is packed full of play-by-play descriptions of key games, on-the-field events, side-lines antics, and locker room scenes of some of the most iconic moments of his Hall of Fame career.

It was a blast reading how Steve interacted with so many famous and influential players, coaches, leaders, and teachers. I wore out YouTube looking for videos of the games and plays he described and watching how things played out after he finished telling the story from his perspective.

Steve Young is not an ordinary human. He's accomplished too much to be considered ordinary. Yet he earned everything he achieved. His stories about working hard, persevering, overcoming adversity, and achieving goals are every parent's dream come true--I've already dropped a few Steve Young stories on my kids! His achievements aren't limited to the football field, either. His journey through dealing with, understanding, and coming to terms with the severe anxiety he battled make his accomplishments even more significant. I especially appreciated Steve's openness about his religious beliefs and how they influenced his life and his decisions.

As far as biographies go, it's pretty light. Steve explained that he wrote his memoir for his kids: they never saw him play, and we wanted them to know about his very full life before they were born.
There are no dirty secrets revealed, no conspiracies. Contrary to what you might expect to find in a behind-the-scenes life of a NFL Quarterback who was an extremely eligible bachelor his entire career, it's a G-rated memoir of a G-rated man. As a G-rated dad, I loved that too!

Turns out, that's just Steve Young: devoted to family, faith, and football.

I loved this story, and I bet you will to.

Best for 14 and up.

Happy Reading!

This was so fun. Steve Young was before my time but I grew up hearing a lot about him so his story interested me. He certainly didn't have an easy go of things but he was persistent and overcame so many obstacles, both on and off the field. My only complaint about this book - even as an avid football fan, the play-by-play recaps of what seemed like every game of his career started to get old after a while. All in all I enjoyed it though, and found it inspiring and fun.
