This book was absolutely terrible. The characters were not developed, the story was incredibly weak, and the ending was over the top. The entire book read like an attempt at touching on teenage self-harm and destructive behavior, but it tried so hard that it just seemed incredibly unbelievable and contrived. It was not at all believable and the characters simply failed to connect with the reader in any way.

As usual this Gale Giles novel keeps you on the edge of your seat watching as the relationship between Skye- goth girl- and Matt- regular guy- spirals out of control along with Skye's mental deterioration. It's like watching a train wreck you know is coming, but can't stop. The ending is abrupt and shocking.

It wasn't one of her best but it still is a fast, compelling read.

Genre: bleak lit, goth, relationships
Summary: Skye is a psychopathic liar who uses people to get what she wants. She is loosing the attention of her father and step-mother with the coming birth of a new baby. She does drugs, cuts herself and sleeps around. She picks Matt, an average boy and they start having a messed up relationship. Turns out, Skye wants Matt to kill her parents? If he doesn't, she threatens to hurt his little sister, basically the only person he cares about. At the very end of the book, she pulls a gun on him, telling him to choose who's to die. The ending is cryptic, but I was led to believe that Skye killed herself.
Response: I don't like bleak lit. I don't like the feeling I get when I read it. I don't think the plot is decent and there isn't a point in reading it. I don't know why Skye did all of the things she did and I don't know why Matt put up with it for as long as he did. The ignorance of the parents is astonishing in this book, so I don't think it is too terribly realistic.

Gail Giles never fails to entertain. Love her books! Always dark, suspenseful, edgy and really good.

When Skye, the crazy goth chick at school singles out wallflower Matt for her boyfriend, it seems his dull life might finally take a turn for the better, but what are her real intentions?

I love Gail Giles and I couldn't put this book down. I read the whole thing in a couple of hours. It was my favorite book from 2006.

Pretty decent read. Didn't like Skye. That's probably the point though.

I didn't care for this book at all - the characters weren't developed well at all, and neither was the plot. It was a short, entertaining read, but as a story it lacked everything that makes a story good (as I said, it lacked a developed plot and characters, the characters were pretty horrible and unrealistic, so it was hard to care for any of them). I guess if a teen wanted a short read this might be an okay fit.
