Coming from a family of story-tellers I know this book is correct in that we all have stories about what is like to grow up and even if we talk about the same event, the story will change with the teller. Sometimes our stories will even be picked up by the next generation and told as family lore.

In Commonwealth we are given a glimpse of two families who intermix because of divorce and remarriage and the stories which have broken them apart and brought them back together. This is not a plot-driven book and the stories do not come at us in a linear method whatsoever yet that too seemed correct. When I think back on my own life my memories do not come at me in a chronological order.

I like Patchett's writing a lot. I think you will, too.

I don’t always love a nonlinear narrative, but it works in this book. I can’t decide exactly whose story is being told, or if it’s everyone’s story, and I think that’s the beauty of it. However, I need more than just the surface on Beverly, unless she’s so superficial that that was intentional. I love how the kids became a tribe and the link that made them all a family. 4.5 stars.
