I absolutely loved this little book, which is the non-boring version of the parts of the Odyssey concerning Penelope, told from her point of view. Look: I didn't even read the Odyssey for reals in 9th grade, and even I thought this was awesome.

Having read this book twice now I'm even more conflicted as to what I think about it. Do I like it, or not? There are aspects of it I admire, but I hesitate to say I liked it and I'm still not sure why. I can appreciate far more from the theory reading I had to do parallel to it in class, Cavarero's "The Desire for One's Story" -- reading that was the only point at which I got excited about this book. Is it too explicit in its intentions, I wonder?

There is only one thing I know and that is that I have no strong feelings about it. Maybe that will change. Why should it have to? Am I missing something?

I will have to keep thinking about it.

Wish it had rather focused on the 12 maids than Penelope— Penelope was a little flat and Atwood tried to make up for it by making every other character in the novel intolerable. Not a huge fan of how it sells itself as a retelling when the story itself is fundamentally the same— even so, I didn’t think the final “twist” that Odysseus killed innocent women even worked… Quick read and I enjoyed a lot of the modern world inclusion but ultimately left me a little unsatisfied

I wish I could read the books I read for leisure as quickly the ones I do for school.

Just the right length for a three hour plane journey. Enough to keep me occupied but not gripping enough to keep me reading when the turbulence kicked in!
