Ever since finishing this book, I've been asking myself the same question: Why did the Lisbon girls, all of them young, bright and beautiful, kill themselves? But I guess we get the answer to that question just by reading the book. Mr and Mrs Lisbon are stringent, the girls aren't allowed to participate in any activities other girls their age do. It's oppressive and depressing and so I see the suicides as one final act of self-defiance. One final act they cannot be punished for.

The five Lisbon girls are the treasures of their town. They fascinate young boys and their tale survives even after they killed themselves. I have no idea what I just read or what the conclusion of the book is. It is a strange and mysterious story filled with trauma.

A lot of imagery, I would re-read it due to the detailed descriptions adding to the story
