Have you ever raced through a book and then immediately regretted it, because you keep wanting to dive back into it but then you have to remember you finished it??

That's exactly how I'm feeling with this one!

The Allure of Power is the second installment in the Travellers series about five Brisbane teenagers in the late 90s who are thrust into a world of portals, monsters and magic schools. The first book, The Crysalis Key, was one of my favourite reads last year, so I was excited to read this one and see where the story goes!

While there are more than five perspectives in this book, the majority of the story is focused on Julia. Julia was the least likeable character in the first story, and while she'll never be my fav (not least because that spot is reserved for Hugh), I nonetheless really enjoyed her journey in this one. There is definitely plenty of satisfying character growth here as Julia undergoes a kind of morally grey empowerment that was great to read.

I felt the first half of a book moved fairly slowly, but from about halfway through I was finding it hard to put it down. By the end, it was clear that the groundwork laid in the first half was absolutely an essential part of the journey. Having truly followed Julia through the trenches establishes her character growth in a believable way.

The other characters are still absolutely present in the novel, each having their own separate journeys that sometimes coalesce. I definitely get the sense that we're going to explore each character's journey a bit more, and that in the end it will all come together. I read in the author bio at the end that this is planned to be a seven book series and I was so excited to read that, as I want to stay in this world for a long time yet!

This is a true plot and character focused YA series and I find that SO refreshing. (please go and read adult books if you want sexual tension).

Another awesome installment in such a fun series and I can't wait for more!

Thank you to NetGalley for the Earc in exchange for an honest review.
This book was very adventurous and very fun and fast-paced. My favorite. part of the story was Julia's character development from the start to the end of the book, she started out as a selfish character and developed into a character who cares about others
And while the writing wasn't my favorite writing it didn't take me out of the story and I was still enjoying myself when reading it.
One thing I didn't like was how Mel and Julia both up and left their families while Julia wasn't on purpose she didn't care that much and chose to leave them behind in the end.
