As someone who struggles with the same things Gilda does, I found this book oddly comforting. Not only that, but it never failed to keep me in suspense!

this is a quick, engaging read but good lord is it miserable. it’s uncomfortable and all over the place and the vignettes bounce around like pinball, though i acknowledge a lot of this is on purpose. i found a lot of it bordered on misanthropic and the ending speeds through tying loose ends like a bullet train. i didn’t hate it but i didn’t really like it either.

Iban a ser 5 estrellas hasta la primera mitad del libro. Perdió un poco de su encanto cuando
Gilda es arrestada, demas de que la muerte de grace parace que se resolvió sin más.
la primera mitad salva el libro completamente.

This book was like reading my thoughts on a page at a time. It has highly overwhelming but also deeply comforting. Gilda, the main character, felt like me in an almost scary way at times. The ending was incredibly resonant, with things not wrapping up perfectly but with a clear hopeful outlook to the future. I broke out into tears a few times in the book. There were also some very big shocks and twists in the book but all were appropriate.

“Thinking about why we exist, and how sad everything is…I keep looking at everyone and thinking, Oh my God, I just want them to smile.

Gilda is a late 20s lesbian trapped in a painfully familiar cycle of rumination, anxiety, depression, and existential dread. I feel like saying any more than that will tarnish the experience of reading this absolutely fantastic novel, so I’ll refrain. All I’ll really say is that nothing I’ve ever read has come so close to articulating my experience of the world, and now I am a puddle of tears.

This book was billed to me by several reviewers as "funny." I cried through the final third.  I find it hard to give a star rating as a result. I think I will be reflecting on this for a long time.
