Look, I don’t hate this book, there are things I like. Sophie is a great, complex character, who I love - and not just because we share a name, but I have some issues.
Fatphobia and fat-shaming is very strong in this book, with people being seen as more beautiful when skinny and ugly when fat (this book is aimed at middle grade, young adult right? That’s incredibly problematic!) also girls are seen as less beautiful with short hair, and the general diet culture around the cast of characters, it feels very dated.
It also features what I can only describe as Transphobia and deadnaming. I understand the plot of the book involves characters switching genders but… the way it was handled left me uncomfortable

So, overall, I will continue with the series, but only because I bought them as a set.

I thought the series would get better with the themes but I could tell that fat phobia, diet culture, beauty culture, and misogyny were going to continue. Then I had to stop when the author thought it was okay to introduce transphobic themes with making a previous male character be changed back to a woman when princes were made evil. Fuck that.

The book is written well, it kept me glued to the pages until the end.

It's just full of misogyny, misandrism, homophobia, fatphobia... I am absolutely not continuing with this series, I can't stand anything in it.
