incredibly powerful book. If the content of the book wasn't saturated with technical knowledge I would recommend for everyone to read this book. It truthfully goes to show how biases/behaviors that exist within cultures don't populate overnight and simmer through generations. I commend Ms. Washington for compiling all the evidence that probably took tens of years to obtain and collecting accounts from individuals that were effected.

This book is informative. It is also depressing AF. I added all the content warnings, but it serves a purpose, it's not just a warning of triggers. This is what has been done to African Americans throughout history in the name of science (in most cases) and I think it's important to know.

Whew. This book is heavy. And it contains so much truth that people need to hear. Harriet Washington doesn't shy away from the nuance and complexities around experimentation by medical authorities on Black bodies.

She discusses grave robbing and vaccine experiments. She covers the major scandals that many of us have likely heard about from the Tuskegee syphilis experiments to sterilization and experimentation of Black and women of color. She adds a lot of nuance and history to those episodes, covering the main facts as well as clear analysis about what drive the medical doctors to pursue those experiments and how it is reflective of white supremacy.

I learned a great deal from this book. I'll definitely be taking these lessons forward. There's really good reasons why Black men and women, and other people of color, have serious distrust of the medical system in this country. We can't ignore the true history when it's outlined so clearly and well.

It's not an easy read, but I still encourage people - especially doctors and those in the medical field - to confront our history with your own eyes.

↠ NINETEEN HOURS LATER 😥
↠ Dense novel documenting the horrific medical experiments performed on Blacks and African-Americans from slavery to present
↠ Extremely graphic, harrowing, read
↠ I’m mad it took me 30 years to learn about this.
↠ The amount of complicit medical schools in the underground trade of black bodies is astounding and all should be held accountable
↠ This book left me feeling angry. Knowing most  medical breakthroughs came out of treating black people like lab rats… just sickening
