Good for a late elementary or early middle reader, not especially great storyline, characters, or writing style; nothing spectacular

I could not get into this story. It's my favorite genre, but I couldn't care less about the main character Nick, for some reason. I got about halfway and gave up.

So, I wrote a review for this when I read it but accidentally deleted a whole bunch of reviews when I was reorganizing my shelves... So I guess I just have to read them all again so I can give accurate reviews :D

A great little fairy tale! Well-written, and with good characters. A little too much gross stuff for my taste, but boys would love it.

My main issue with this is that it was blah. You're reading and it's okay, little boring, loose on character development, etc but then, then you get a tiny bit of Jack's actual story and that's when you start realizing that, while it's not the most compelling retelling on Jack's part, you really would have preferred a full on retelling from his POV while his story was taking place. Not Nick, years later when history sorta repeats itself. And, yes, I'm also aware that the "Further Tales Adventures" all take place after the fact with different characters and stories and whatnot, and I appreciate that, but this fell a little flat.

I did enjoy the Jack/Nick interaction.
