I've just finished this amazing book (and left it rather battered, from carrying it around with me everywhere). Wilbur Smith is a master of his trade. He takes the reader on such an epic journey. This book has everything, authentic historical feel, romance, drama, suspense, action...I really felt I was in Ancient Egypt experiencing all I was reading! The charachters are brilliant! I love their relationships with each other. I also love the way Mr Smith puts the charahters in jeopardy and skillfully navagate them around it to the other side! The Authous note at the end has left me very intregued. Is it true?

After 5 months, I just have to give up. Maybe I'll try reading it again sometime...but not sometime soon.

The opening scene of this book almost put me off, the hunt for hippos and the descriptions of what happened once they got back to shore were pretty graphic and as a lover of wildlife made for difficult reading. But I read on. And overall I’m glad I preserved. The fight scenes weren’t the easiest to read, from the point of view that I couldn’t quite picture what was going on. I quite like the main character Taita, even though he could literally turn his hand to anything, medicine, art, music, languages, invention, he was almost super human. If you don’t like gore than this probably isn’t the book for you, from fights, to punishments, to hunting scenes, he really doesn’t hold back on the descriptions. And it did feel repetitive at times. However I found it quite readable and enjoyed the epic journey that was taken without knowing what was round the next bend in the river. I don’t know much about this era to know how historically actuate it is. I hadn’t realised it was part of a series when I started it, but the ending is left open for it, so I am actually quite intrigued to see where this goes next.

What a great adventure! The characters are paper-thin but there's so much action going on that I just enjoyed the ride. River God is not great literature but it's still a pleasure to read.

Wilbur Smith is an excellent storyteller. He has a knack for putting words to visual images.
