the second Hardinge book I've read and once again it did not disappoint!

I loved A Skin Full Of Shadows more but this was just as beautifully written.
Luckily for me I have more of Hardinges books on my TBR shelf so I can continue to dive into the beautiful worlds she builts

This book was such a tense bummer for like 95% of it.  There was so much action, and world building, that I think the characters suffered a little. I know the point of the main character Hark was that he was just trying to survive in the hardest of circumstances, but he did so in such a slippery way that it was difficult to get a grasp on who he was and what he wanted. He had a nice little arc at the end, but for the most part was just a victim of extreme circumstances.

If you like your books with more plot than character, you’ll like this one more than I did. Each new obstacle or battle was amped up to an impossible degree than the one before.

Still an incredible world brought to life by the talented Hardinge, but I was never too eager to pick up the book and get back to it.

Another highly original and beautifully written story by this author. Not quite as tight as some of her others, but still completely wonderful to read.

conflicted about what to rate this. world building and characters were great, but it feels suited to a younger audience, which i wasn’t in the mood for.. nice book, wrong time maybe? will revisit.

Some good ideas but it didn’t hold me. Don’t know if it’s because I’m in a TLT-induced reading slump.
