My son and I read this every single night before bed. Most often twice. We reference certain things from the book daily.. it’s a beautifully illustrated and sweetly written story!

I liked this, and I loved the illustrations and vibrancy of the setting. It reads younger with simple text, and a repeating structure that kids will pick up on. There is some counting also. Two things that bothered me: the baby doesn't have a name, other than Baby, which seemed to push me out of the story rather than pulling me in, and also makes the writing sound a little stilted. Also, it struck me as odd that the mother has absolutely no idea or awareness of what the baby, in a sling on her back, is doing the entire time. I'm not sure that's realistic. Really like the diversity represented and note about the author & illustrator backgrounds related to the African market setting.

While Mama shops at the market, Baby, riding on her back, is given treats to eat by vendors in decreasing numbers: bananas, oranges, biscuits, and coconut. He puts the extras in the basket on Mama's head and only when they are ready to leave (Mama thinks Baby must be hungry!) does she notice the extra food. The repetitive, cumulative text will keep listeners entertained and anticipating, and the vibrant, detailed mixed-media illustrations are eye-catching and fun! A winner for storytime and one-on-one sharing.

July 2018 - a sweet, vivid story. Ben loves that baby has eaten all these things without the mom realizing it, and counting down the items adds another element. Colorful and fun, I think this would make a good storytime read-aloud.

A beautiful book I bought for my 10 month old son. It's a wonderful story that incorporates counting along with beautiful bright pictures. Highly recommend as it's a book that will last for years.
