Aside from being slightly put-down-able, this books deserves a perfect score. There's twist after twist after twist, it'll answer one questio  and immediately have me asking 2 more. The characters are interesting, and I really like how this book is contained both by geography and time. Also how it questions if memory equals identity, and how others see you affect how you see yourself.

The premise of criminals, hardened and violent, being offered a chance at a second life compliments of some miraculous memory erasing technology was an interesting conceit at best. This book did raise some interesting questions about what makes someone "worthy" of redemption, how trauma impacts and perhaps connects us, and the nature of evil. All the same, Sternbergh seemed to rush through elements of the plot too quickly (hello there cobbled together explanation of deliberate memory loss) and his characterizations often felt maudlin, exaggerated, and/or stereotypical. Perhaps that's simply the nature of the sort of western thriller genre, which is not my usual cup of tea, but it grated at times. All the same, an enjoyable, escapist read worthy of 3 stars.

i couldn't put this book down! it started a little slow but it wasn't boring at any point. it was like a buildup to a big climactic ending with lots of twists. i was surprised by how much i enjoyed this book, i dont normally read this genre, but it makes me want to try more.
