This memoir is the epitome of you truly never know what’s going on in someone else’s life.

While iCarly wasn’t a must-watch show for me, I still grew up around its fandom, especially having been a huge Drake & Josh fan. I knew who Jennette McCurdy was, Sam to Miranda Cosgrove’s Carly. The show was like every other Nickelodeon and Disney TV show at the time—silly, cheesy, mindless. I was much more obsessed with the careers of the Disney Channel teens, following Miley and Zac and the Jonas Brothers every move so I never paid much attention to Nick’s stars.

In recent years, however, as more came out about “The Creator”, as Jennette refers to him in her book, I started reading more and more into the behind-the-scenes at Nick. And of course, I heard whisperings about how Jennette was treated, and how crazy her mom apparently was.

Nothing can prepare you for what Jennette reveals in these pages. It’s insane and awful what all she went through at the hands of her own mother, and you would have never known it. Jennette writes her story with blunt honesty, not trying to sugarcoat. Only trying to convey how her feelings changed over the years toward her career and her family. She’s a great writer and storyteller, and I’m glad she got to a healthy point in her life to share everything. A very eye-opening autobiography that gives you a deep glimpse into the harsh reality of childhood stardom.

I listened to the audiobook, read by the author herself and boy do I recommend doing that! I believe it adds a massive extra layer to this already brilliant, heartbreaking biography. Do look up all trigger warnings before reading, because it gets very graphic and raw.

This audiobook feels like it's played back at 125% speed. That makes the delivery a little abrupt in places.

I read this because it was one of the most read books on 2022 in the online book-club I'm in, and I really had no idea what it was about going in. I have no vested interest in the subject matter; for all her fame, Jennette McCurdy (or her character, Sam, in iCarly) was not on my radar at all until now. I wouldn't know her from a bar of soap... except I assume she would be the biped.

This book is seriously grim, I don't know why it didn't rattle me though. I guess I somewhat identified with the eating disorder stuff, to a lesser extent. It's complete garbage how some parents treat their children. Having to live through a childhood on eggshells .. needing to maintain that level of vigilance, even when you don't know that your experience is any different from anyone else's, leaves some serious scars on a person. I have seen it in people close to me.. and it tends to be intergenerational.

Some people go through horrors and come out careful and mindful, and some just come out a bit worn out and snarky. I don't know that I would have ever become friends with someone like Jennette McCurdy, as she is the sort of person who leans away from conflict and then ends up feeling sore about it afterwards. I have always felt on edge around such people. It's a survival thing, but not one I like to be around, and that may be what causes some of my disdain for parts of the book.

I did enjoy some of the one liners; "Our yoghurt has soured" felt very metaphorical and also absurd; the term "thrug" for an awkward three person hug that someone else invites themselves into, feels like a fantastic neologism that I really ought to adopt.

It would be wrong to give this book anything but five stars. This is Jennette's story and I'm so proud of her for telling it. Make no mistake, this book can be hard to read. Some truly awful things have happened to her. I can't even begin to get into it, not only because I shouldn't. Trying to summarize these experiences wouldn't do justice to the impact they had on Jennette, and context is important to understanding the depth of her trauma. I cried multiple times, and my jaw dropped at the end of every other chapter. Truly, this woman has led an unbelievable life that demanded so much from her, and the mere fact of this book's existence is a mark of healing. I can't say I enjoyed reading it because that seems like an inappropriate word; this was a gut wrenching experience. But my enjoyment isn't really the point. Jennette, I hope you wrote this book for you, and that you got to say everything you wanted to say, and that you are as proud of this accomplishment as you've made me feel. I really don't think anybody else's opinion matters.
