I'm very glad I waited to read this after first getting a copy. It's very intense and does not shy away from all the harmful things we think up from the entertainment industry. It was incredibly hard to heard Jenette recount it all as well. It's a good book and discusses a lot of important topics while giving a deep look into unhealthy cycles, coming to terms with abuse from parents, eating disorders and recovery from, and so much more.

“I'm allowed to hate someone else's dream, even if it's my reality.”

I could not put this story down. This story was so darkly hilarious, brutally honest, and very intimately written. Jennette McCurdy showed that love of all kinds are intricate and sometimes all-consuming. It can be vicious, uplifting, nurturing, and traumatizing all at the same time.

Jannette McCurdy’s humor is truly one-of-a kind and made me smile even at the darkest moments. I was laughing during chapter 1 when she recounts how she thinks she will positively be able to wake her mother up from a coma by whispering that she’s at her goal weight, giggling when her mother died and she’s replying to a fling who texted her that her mom wouldn’t die, momentarily chuckling about how when her life comes crashing down  (of course) an Ariana Grande song is playing in her Uber. All of these being very serious and concerning events and the accompanying humorous narration made the events all the more honest.

I once had a theater teacher tell me that sometimes the best way to act out sadness… the kind of sadness where you’re supposed to be inconsolable (I’m talking body convulsing sobs) was to start laughing. When we’re sad we really don’t know how to act, and we sometimes laugh at the most guttural sadness. That’s what this book felt like.

Jannette McCurdy is truly a survivor… and I hope she’s finally able to start living her dream after so long of living someone else’s…no matter if that dream is writing, directing, or playing charades with Tom Hanks.

Beautifully vulnerable and brave. Being read by the author brought an extra layer of authenticity to it.

Wow. Since I never watched iCarly or Sam and Cat I had virtually no exposure to the author until this book came out. This is definitely the type of book I’ll only get through once. When I say heartbreaking, I mean it. It is so deeply disturbing at times and upsetting all the time. But it’s also humorous. It’s a great book about not-great circumstances. Please mind the trigger warnings.
