Shocking to read about the kind of people who become parents and about the struggles they leave behind in their children, in more than one generation. I've never known anything about McCurdy before listening to this and I didn't feel like I would've needed to, but maybe there are things I would've understood the context of had I been a fan of hers through the years.

Hard to add anything review-wise that hasn't already been said. I had this book on hold for MONTHS and it was worth the wait and didn't disappoint. Never thought I would be rooting for someone to die of cancer, but this book got me to. McCurdy is incredibly astute and I hope she lives a long, happy life as a writer and director while nobody bothers her. The ironic part for me personally was reading about McCurdy's misery with fame she didn't ask for, because I grew up without cable, have never seen a single episode of iCarly and had never heard of her until she was on a podcast I listen to talking about the book. I would literally not have recognized her on the street and had no idea what the hell a "sam puckett" was. (And I'm not googling what a butter sock is.)  Anyway, Jennette if you read this I only know you from this book and not a kid's TV show, so you have at least one fan that only knows you as a deeply talented author.

The beginning of this book felt a bit slow at points. Perhaps it was the choppy dialogue bits that I always find a bit confusing in memoirs because the dialogue surely can’t be one hundred percent what happened. Memory bits aside, the book was very interesting to hear about Jennette McCurdys point of view and her life experience especially when I saw a smal part of it on screen growing up. Also, I find it helpful to read about relationships with moms that are not the picture perfect best friend one depicted in Gilmore Girls. I relate to Jennette a lot more. The middle and end of the book were more fast paced with shorter chapters at points that helped the book flow. I guess I started to appreciate her writing style more once it got to the point where she was on Nickelodeon because I had more of a connection with that time in my own life. Jennette does a great job processing her emotions and experiences and I can only begin to imagine what a tiring and long process that was and is.

It's so sad to see how Jennette was treated by her mom and the industry (plus the media). I appreciate and admire her for talking publicly about this, because the world needs to know how badly actors are treated. 

But check out the trigger warnings before sitting down to read this book.

Such a deep, honest, and brave telling of her own story. It feels weird to me to review someone’s trauma and personal experience. So I’ll just say this: a well told read that I highly recommend. Especially to those who may struggle or have struggled with an abusive parent, eating disorders, and addiction.
