Simply put, a great book. I usually don't care for memoirs (mainly because I don't care about famous people, especially celebrities) but this one was very thoughtful. I pretty much never watched the author's shows, so I didn't know much about her, but while reading I felt deeply for her. I hope she can be happy and that she goes on to do great things (even if it's 'just' being happy). Rather than being glad her mom died, I'm glad she seems recovered (or to be recovering, as it can be a lifelong process). Either way, her mom dying (both literally and, more importantly, metaphorically, as her presence was still within the author) definitely was what she needed  — even as heartless as it may sound.

My one critique: I would have loved to get more 'guidance' on i.e. what age she was when a chapter started, because I found myself sometimes lost at the beginning of some of them because of the time jump.

All in all, the author's writing style is enjoyable and realistic, showing both the vulnerable and the funny, balancing the cynical and apathetic with the emotional and caring.
That scene in the end when she recalls the time when she was purging without having checked that the rest of the stalls were empty beforehand, only for a kid to ask for her autograph as she's vomiting was, in all its unrelatability, completely relatable.
If you can tolerate the trigger warnings, I would definitely recommend.

I'm very glad I waited to read this after first getting a copy. It's very intense and does not shy away from all the harmful things we think up from the entertainment industry. It was incredibly hard to heard Jenette recount it all as well. It's a good book and discusses a lot of important topics while giving a deep look into unhealthy cycles, coming to terms with abuse from parents, eating disorders and recovery from, and so much more.

Very raw and honest, content and the abuse was hard to get through at times. Some well written lines and observations and lots of dry zingers, esp for early childhood parts, that get lost in the retelling of intense trauma of the middle section — maybe that’s appropriate tho

First audiobook I’ve finished, I think her reading adds to it!

a dark and emotionally challenging story about finding yourself after spending your whole life moulding yourself in to what someone else demands you to be, in the midst of grief and mental illness, in an industry that only cares if you’re making them money. really interesting and beautifully written. hearing jennette’s thoughts through each moment being recounted was interesting and vulnerable. it felt like a story of importance, that needed to be told. hard to put down but i did have to take a break in the middle as it was so hard to listen to, but listening to it read by jennette herself felt very impactful. definitely worth a read.

Harrowing, hilarious, and relatable. A deeply troubling and deeply healing familiar narrative for the children of impossible and abusive mothers.
