A darkly comic but disturbing insight into McCurdy's upbringing as a child star
in the 1990s and 00s and the exploitation and failures of safeguarding at the hands of her abusive mother and TV moguls. I was enthralled by the quick pace and vivid nature of McCurdy's storytelling, and her almost detached and objective narrative - especially in the audiobook version - reinforces the manipulation and exploitation McCurdy experienced. An important and culturally on point memoir.

As someone who always wants to read nonfiction/memoirs, I tend to not finish them even if they’re very good. But I finished the audiobook in a day. This was such an emotional read/listen. I had so many thoughts and feelings throughout the book. And so many things were relatable (even if my life experiences were far different from hers). Definitely something I recommend, but with caution because there are a lot of topics that could be triggering for people.
