A wonderful young YA / upper middle grade novel that can be enjoyed by all age groups! While I was reading I thought about how well you could even retell parts of the story to young children as bedtime stories. It's refreshing and healing to read about teenagers who are as adventurous as they are careful, and whose family joins in on the adventure without asking questions or taking over the lead. If you're looking for a story about friendship, daring, myths, the environment and discovering family history, all in a very natural and accessible way, look no further!

This is written in dual perspective, which I didn't enjoy at first, so it was a slow starter for me, but as the stories started to come together it wasn't as jarring to shift perspective.

The origin and mythology of the stories the book is based on were unknown to me, and I liked learning a little about the spirit realm and it's spirits.

There is a theme of speaking to elders, or rather listening respectfully to them throughout - and in all cases in the story the elders are worthy of that respect.

The descriptions of the characters physical traits were lovely and tactile. Nina's use of social media was clever also, and felt realistic.
Why she didn't read the contract though, SO FRUSTRATING!!

I really enjoyed this book. My only complaint is that the chapters in Nina's perspective have a very "creative writing class" vibe, with unnecessary detail that a professor would push for but as a reader I really don't need to know. I lived for the Cottonmouth chapters though.
