My first review and my first 5 star read. This book was an absolute blast to read, when I initially read this book I struggled visualizing the world that Pierce was trying to create for us. After 5-7 chapters it was no longer a struggle, I loved the concept, the plot was great and never fell off at any point. You fall in love with Darrow and initially it was really easy to hate the Gold characters but then you start to like them as you progress through the book. The fighting sequences were my favorite parts, the author does a really good job of illustrating the fights. This book was so easy to devour, I can't wait to read the rest of the series.

Finally getting around to writing a review for this and I'm dropping my star rating just a bit.
My biggest issue with this book was that I went into it expecting way too much. As is the case with most YA this was ridiculously overhyped. This was a very bland book. The only interesting character was Sevro and he spent much of his time off the page.
What bothered me the most was the lack of world building. This is supposed to be set on Mars yet I found myself often forgetting this was even sci-fi because 75% of this took place in one area playing a dumb game.
I think I might have enjoyed this a lot more if I hadn't been expecting so much going into it.
