3.5 stars. A couple things I learned from this volume. Alita has a type, she can still kick butt, and I don't love side quests.

One might ask, is this the same Alita that I've been reading for the past 5 volumes? It's relatively new, and weird and it gets going at the same time. I'm in this rush to read volume 7 in wanting to know what the hell is really going on now.

A new arc story, introducing a new main character.

We have been able to see a better world. We are aware that the city is huge and hides many secrets. Zalem is simple a utopia nobody knows or can reach. The earth city is simply a source of materials for the floating place. We get to interact with more people with the mark expanding a vision of this floating city.

Alita has grown old and many years have passed which allows you to see how much she was grown and the other characters and also how she is still the same cyborg. She is still lost and in a new quest to get back what she once tried to leave behind. That is something I like about her character. How much she had learn and evolve through the arc. First the powerful kid that thought she was invisible, which she almost was, then we see her able to have romantic feelings, the regular escape of reality due to heart break. The grieving person that is learning again how to be human and how she is taking down to earth proving that she no longer is invisible, then how she redeems her mistakes to then start all over again falling in a stage of savagery while pursuing her memories and the only person that had love her unconditionally.

Now, Aido is an ass and he manipulates emotionally the main character, so I feel conflicted with him.

  • Strong character development? Yes
  • Loveable characters? Yes
  • Diverse cast of characters? Yes

This review is for Volumes 1 to 9.

I became interested in reading the manga after watching the Alita: Battle Angel movie because the premise showed heaps of promise. This is definitely an action-packed read although the illustration is not exactly my type of art. I wanted to like this but it feels like the work is not polished. The manga pacing and execution totally threw me off. I found it hard to become grounded in the narrative and I felt like my bunch of ‘whys’ were not answered satisfactorily. We hardly get a taste of the surface of the world and the characters, and some things don’t make much sense.

I’m giving it a chance on the next volumes but I’m not that optimistic.

2.5 short stars out of 5
