You’ve gotta read this book. If you are motivated or need motivating, if you enjoy stories of personal motivation and survival. If you enjoy stories of rising above oneself to reach success when everything seems to work against you. And then wrap that in to a thrilling conclusion of one of the most amazing adventures in all sports history then you should read this book.

Judge me all you want for reading the young readers version but I enjoyed myself and I’m happy to move on to another book now.

Out of all the many books I've read, this is the one that has taken me most by surprise. I don't give a hoot about sports 99% of the time, and I often (not always) find nonfiction dry. So if you had told me I'd end up loving a nonfiction book about rowing, I wouldn't have believed you. And if you'd told me this book would end up being one of my very favorites, I probably would have laughed in your face. And yet when I picked this book up a couple years ago, that is exactly what happened. It was told in such a way that I found the history of the Great Depression and the art of rowing completely fascinating. And I found myself cheering for these boys as I read (much to the alarm of everyone around me, I'm sure). I decided to read the youth edition of this book to my kids, ages 9 and 11, and they both were equally enamored.

3.5 stars - Had I not read Unbroken, this would be a much more impressive book. It’s good, and my heart goes out to Joe Rants. But, Hillenbrand’s writing is much more moving and engrossing.

Wow!! Now that was a good book! Probably one of the best I've read in a while... I read the young readers edition this time in the hopes of having one of my boys (they really don't like reading) pick it up next and finished it by audio version while cleaning the house. 👌

In lieu of the Olympics taking place right now, which I won't watch after their disgusting opening show, I picked up this book instead. It's the true story of the Seattle rowing team going to Germany for the for the 1936 Olympics. It's a story of persevering against the odds, hard work, heartbreak, teamwork, selflessness, and history. It's very inspiring and exciting and I will most likely read the adult version soon before watching the movie. 5/5 stars and enjoyable for any age. 😁
