Absolutely loved this. It was eerie and dark in just the right ways. The twists were great and unexpected. I usually struggle with books when they switch character perspectives and timeliness but it was well done in this book and I didn't struggle with it.

Absolutely heartbreaking book. From the start I was swallowed into the tragic backstory and life of the women who ran this novel. Meredith’s love for her daughter and complicated love for her own mother really brought to light how complex mothers and daughters can be when faced with the ordeals of womanhood. The twists will leave you horrified and heartbroken by the end.

I was enjoying this atmospheric read so much until that stupid ending and the last 120 pages really ruined this for me.
So all this time Regina is alive and it’s not Liza who’s haunting the ocean but Marina??? Are you kidding me? And even after the climax the author had to sacrifice Meredith because emotional damage. Literally couldn’t connect with Meredith and her shitty behaviour at all. What a waste of a great suspenseful plot!

After separating from her wife, Meredith returns to her childhood home on the coast with her daughter, Alice. There, she finds her mother suffering from the early stages of Alzheimer's and convinced that the women of their family are cursed, and that the water is not safe for them. As Meredith discovers more about the curse, can she keep her family safe, or will the water claim them one by one?

This is a complex, multi-POV story spanning several generations of the same family. I was grateful for the inclusion of a family tree and named chapters that helped me to keep all the characters straight. The first half of this book was immersive and atmospheric, and I enjoyed the build up of tension and the intricacies of the narrative. However, for me the second half became repetitive and over-complicated, and didn't hold my attention in the same way. Storylines that had engaged my interest were never fully resolved, and I found the ending unsatisfying.

This book would be ideal for someone looking for a slow-paced, well-written multi-generational saga with a spooky, supernatural twist. There's a strong emphasis on mothers and daughters and the complexity of their relationships, which the author delves into quite deeply and which I found interesting and thought-provoking. A decent read overall.

This book was so interesting! From the beginning I was swept into the story and fascinated about how each generation of mothers and daughters were different and similar. I will admit when the chapters began to alternate to so many different women, I was afraid the story would get too diluted and the depth for each character would not be flushed out. Luckily, those extra chapters were added to elaborate on to the story, without taking anything away.

The ending was just amazingly heart-wrenching and I wish I could read it again for a different ending. Such a good book and I am excited to pick up more from this author.
