I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this and how quickly I worked through it. The town of Macondo, and the Buendias’, intertwine and come to life in a compelling, magical way - I feel close to them. I can picture myself in their home, in the town. In so many ways it’s a tragedy but it unfurls so naturally that it doesn’t feel that way. I couldn’t keep track of the Aurelianos by the end but it didn’t really matter. This sort of reads like a long-exposure photo. It’s so rich and dense that I’ll probably reread it at some point. I actually found the writing to be quite fast-paced.

Lives up to the hype? Read it if you’re up for an ever-unwinding family saga and some OG magical realism, don’t read it if you get frustrated keeping track of names or by problematic protagonists 😂 not for everyone

I truly loved this book. At it’s best, I was ready to mourn the family’s morals with Ursula, curse the useless men, and keep turning with the never ending wheel of fate of the Buendía family. At it’s most tedious, I was motivated to continue reading closely by the magical words and half-hidden realizations of Garcia’s writing. The magic of life in Macando is tempting at first, horrifying along the way, and frustratingly peaceful at the close.

I also wonder if anyone else had a “favorite” (least horrifying?) part of the family? To put it into the language of my youth: were you Team José Arcadio or Team Aureliano? Team Strong-headed bull or Team Daydreaming Hermit? Probably the only correct answer to this question is Team Ursula.

maybe this just isn’t my cup of tea, but i found this book to be overall boring and slow. i wasn’t sure what was exactly happening and the abundance of names kept confusing me at times. 2/5 stars

It's one of those books that are difficult to give a star rating because there's too much going on.

Beautiful prose and masterful manipulation of time/pacing. I loved the magical realism component.

Dear Matija,
this truly was one of the wildest books I've ever read. Some of the scenes will forever be engraved in my brain. Like flowers blooming from dentures, like line of blood crossing the town of Macondo and many more. I find it really interesting how Aureliano, at the end of the family line claimed that the last Aureliano (who is the only one with the pig's tail) was the only child made from love when it was with him that the line stopped. It goes with the fact that the family so engulfed with solitude would end with two people who were never alone because they had each other. Even though this book is full of incest and the characters are at time horrible people I think I will re-read this book many times in my life. Hopefully during summer months because nothing describes summer better then the scene where it is so humid that fish start to swim in the sky.
