A veces puede pecar de pretencioso y de ponerse muy intenso en sus monólogos filosóficos, pero La Elegancia del Erizo, esconde oro en sus personajes, específicamente en Renée. Pues todo lo que hay detrás de lo que yo diría es complejo de superioridad y la frustración hacia su posición en la sociedad tiene su fundamento, y probablemente muchas personas se sientan, o terminen sintiéndose, de esta manera.
Renée puede caer mal si no te pones en su lugar: una persona cansada de ser considerada menos por las personas de alta sociedad, los "cultos" que apenas y notan su presencia. Además tiene motivos familiares para sentir que será castigada si demuestra que es mas de lo que su "posición social le establece".
Sí, Renée es odiosa en sus pensamientos hacia aquellos para quienes trabaja, pero solo basta con que por una vez alguien la note a ella y su manera de ver el mundo, para que nos demos cuenta de su interior tormentoso y sus temores.
Quisiera haber empatizado de igual manera con Paloma, que aún no termino de comprender su papel en la historia. Hubiese preferido a Manuela, la amiga de Renée como segunda narradora.
Y hablando de narración, quiero mas libros de Muriel Barbery, pues tiene una capacidad de construir frases de manera diferente a lo habitual y ser muy claros en su intención.
Y por último punto: amé todo el staneo a Leo Tolstoi :3

I enjoyed reading it except for the ranty philosophical parts. I wonder if the translation was not up to the task of making those interesting. Or I'm just a crude American.

I loved this book, its premise, and its characters.
After glancing through negative reviews, I concede that the characters do feel contrived. And I do wonder about the book's message-- don't underestimate someone until you really get to know them. But both the "enwisened" characters and the aristocratic do that to the other side...
There is room for improvement, but I liked it because of its dabbling in philosophy and applies those theories to everyday situations, aand because of the Cinderella love story between middle aged people.
