okay so this took me so long to read! but i did really enjoy it - the ending was as satisfying as i hoped it would be, but it's a good ending. i really loved the journey the book took you on.

Good story but enjoyment taken away by the extremely odd ending that ruined it for me. I'm mad and disappointed

This was so much fun and so wholesome!

Sword fights, battles, and jousting were simply fun. Instances of Silence's confusion, that other characters struggled to clear up, were hilarious. The magic was just the right amount of fantastical without making you feel like it was the answer to everything.

Silence was also really pleasant to read about. Their internal struggle to find themselves was difficult not to empathize with and their all around goodness made it impossible to see them as anything but a victim of life and circumstance. Not to say that protagonists are not allowed to be prickly or that only innocent goody-good protagonists are deserving of empathy, but it did make it difficult, if not impossible, for anyone to not side with them. I also appreciated that while the struggles were significant and life altering, the tale never became misery porn.

The book managed to deal with heavy complex subjects while not becoming boring or unpleasant to read and that is an impressive feat. Except for that one thing towards the end of the book, which made me wince at the time of reading but was addressed by the author in the afterword, I rate it 10/10 would hide on the shelves in a school library!

I felt like this one only picked up pace during the past 50 pages. For the rest it was a bit mainstream and bland, not really capturing my attention.

By all accounts this should be so far up my alley but the agonizingly slow pace made me unenthusiastic about continuing
