This book took me for a wild ride. When I first started it I was immediately wrapped into the world, there was no waiting for things to get interesting. Even the middle section, which I find to usually have a lull in most books especially realistic fiction, which this book is not, it still grabbed me. I loved all the characters and even the characters I hated I felt emotional about.
Could not recommend this book more, please go out and read it, it may be one of my favorites.

August, born a monster, longing to be a human, and Kate, born a human, wanting to show the world and her father how much of a monster she can be. One city, two opposing sides dealing with the same problem with different ideologies. Monsters looming in the dark, always at bay, and the constant threat of war and death.

I liked it, although It took me a good while to get into the book, to really get into the setting and characters (took about the first 100ish pages), and once I did, I couldn't stop reading. I think it was the moment things started making sense, mainly in regards to the characters, the plot's background and setting, that I started enjoying the story, and yet, it all went by so... quickly.
Not gonna give any spoilers, but I just felt there was something missing throughout the whole thing. Like there were multiple instances where I wanted MORE of whatever was going on, more of the emotion maybe, more of the heaviness, more of the tension, more of the stakes, more of the feelings and emotions and I don't know, and the book just wouldn't give it to me.
The writing is gorgous, schwab's style never disappoints me, her way of words ever so captivating and intriguing, keeping me pulled in and retaining my intrest.
The premise was great, had the potential to be dark. It WAS dark at times, violent and tense and others.
And yet, something was missing, and yet I still ate the book up and it was over so quickly.

Am feeling very mixed about this, as all my other schwab's reads have been instant all-time favourites, reread and very highly enjoyed, ones I still hold dear and see myself revisiting time and time again.
I don't feel that connection with The Monsters Of Verity, and that's all right! While I didn't experience that outstandingly captivating aura the other books gave me, this book was still enjoyable, and for me, it was a good and fun enough read to want to read the sequel (in fact, it's my next read right after this)
All of this to say it was a generally fun read! Maybe it just pales in comparison to my other favourites from the author, but the book deserves a chance of its own.

I didn't like this book as much as I'd hoped, but I still enjoyed it. I liked the idea of monsters being created from human violence and tragedy -- I've never read anything like that before. Some characters in this book were really great. August, the male main character, was definitely my favorite and Kate, the female main character, was not too bad either, but others (let's say August’s brother Leo) were much less than great. I found it surprisingly nice that the two characters didn’t have a romantic relationship!

I kept waiting (and waiting and waiting) for something WOW to happen, but it really didn't. At least nothing that wowed me to the extent that it made me adore the book. I really wished it had though. I also found the writing a little confusing at times, but not so often that I lost track of what was going on. I cannot forget to add that the book also was very nicely written, and not at all confusing, at times too.

Overall, I enjoyed and liked This Savage Song and I would certainly recommend it. I will definitely read the next book whenever it comes out!
