My most succinct reason for disliking this is just that it's not for me. I very much enjoyed the surrealism of the plot, but so much of the book was overshadowed by sections upon sections of what seemed to me to be trite quips trying very hard to be profound and quotable through vague generality. The sections and poems with genuine heart shone through besides, but I couldn't get past the writing, and although a goal of this book seems to be challenging notions of what is natural and sitting with that discomfort, I personally could not get past the recurring upsetting sexual imagery and motifs.

I'm not sure I entirely "got" this book. Some parts were beautiful and descriptive. Others were dry and pretentious.

Not sure if this is a good book for me to start my first review on but ... let's try to review this one.

Firstly... The definion about poets from the beginning??!?! Wow S. So beautiful, yet so painful.
„What is a poet? An unhappy man who hides deep anguish in his heart, but whose lips are so formed that when the sigh and cry pass through them, it sounds like lovely music... And people flock around the poet and say: `Sing again soon`- that is, `may new sufferings turment your soul but your lips be fashioned as before, for the cry would only frighten us, but the music, that is blissful`” - Søren Kierkegaard, Either/Or

Now, the book...
the audiobook: a-ma-zing. Highly highly recommend!! Honestly, at some points, I was freaking out by the sounds of the end of each chapter.

Part memoir, part magic-realism and a little bit of mythical, Tanya Tagaq, an Indigenous author, takes us into the life of a Inuit girl.
Her vision is raw and brutal. It speaks of the natural world, mostly the predator-prey in a beautiful way.

Writing style. Oh my Lord, the writing. One of the most compelling ones that I've ever read: switching from poetry to prose, from myth and dreams to reality.
Lost at some points, but the message behind all of them.. stunning, emotional, beautiful.

Inhale small fears they turn into doubts into words into ideas into anger into hatred into violence.
Exhale large fears and large words they tumble back onto you it’s easy to get buried by our own mirrors.
Inhale small fears and they whisper and travel to your mind observe them and thank them for trying to protect you.
Exhale acknowledgment of the beauty within your instincts and the courage to love small fears.
Inhale hard love suck in the smell and reward reap eat chew swallow devour all the goodness and love that is given to you.
Exhale calmness in acknowledgment of the beauty within the courage it takes to not fear love.”

Tanya manages to fit soo many topics: from being a teenager, from building up friendships to darker sides, like violence, drunkness, sexual assault (trigger warning for all of these!!) but also into mythology, astrology, dreams, animals and their conections with humankind, and even few aspects on shamans and spirits.

I belong here in this world where nothing exists.”

„Dreams will follow you into the day to force action, to change what caused the anxiety. We never like to listen to ourselves, even when we know we have to. We plod on ignoring what we must be, what we are meant to be. We are taught to fear our instincts. We must hunt down and fall in love with the Fear, therefore defeating our self-doubt every day. This is followed by joy. This is followed by handing over control. This is followed by lightness. This is followed by freedom. This releases the dreams.”

Most importantly, the main character gave us a full perspective on how people see themselves, how they connect with their inner-selves - how they appear into the society.

Oh, and how music appears here..
„Sound is a conduit to a realm we cannot totally comprehend. The power of sound conducts our thoughts into emotions that then manifest in action.
Sound can heal.
Sound can kill.
Sound is malleable. Sound can be a spear or a needle. Sound can create the wound and then stitch it. Sound can cauterize and materialize.”

Read this, please. And after let`s have a deep chat about it.
And if you read it, and you`ve reached the end to this mess (thank youu), what are your thoughts about this one?
