A splendid journey into so many aspects: female societal status, relationships, reproduction, cabin fever, isolation, Canadian-American issues, racism, abuse, nature and its destruction, apocalyptic obsession, ancient spirituality and of course, madness. In 251 amazingly well-written, lyrical pages. Written in 1972. For me, an instant modern classic.

weird distinctly weird. Perhaps if I wasn't actually grieving at the moment and Mum was around to discuss this book with, I might think differently.

There are some interesting ideas in Surfacing but too deep for me at the moment.

really gorgeous prose and an interesting premise but the plot twist was really unfortunate!
Spoiler i get that this book was written in the 70’s but the anti abortion rhetoric really really sucked so much
mind the content warnings!! there is also pretty crazy descriptions of drowning but it wouldn’t let me tag that lol
