This incredible book made me feel so seen that I'm taking it to show my therapist this afternoon. Can't really offer higher praise than that!

JVN does a wonderful job of portraying his life in an upbeat tone, even when dealing with difficult topics.

Only dropped the rating by one star because his writing imitates that of a straight white cis man writing a teen girl in the early 2010s and it got on my tits a bit

What a brilliant book! I appreciate JVN so much and have adored watching their growth through Instagram and Queer Eye. When I saw their book being sold at Kinokuniya, I knew I had to try it. Although heartbreaking in parts, there were also so many heartwarming moments and I am so happy to have given it a go. Two of my favourite quotes are below:
‘Refine what you already have - don’t change it at its core.’
and
‘As scary as this can be I want you to know that no matter how broken you feel, and how seemingly unlikely it is, we are never too broken to heal.’ 🥰
I also applaud him for being so open about his HIV+ diagnosis and also about the sexual abuse he endured. It’s challenging for anyone to discuss let alone write about 😫
I’d definitely recommend it to fans of JVN 🥳

I would probably only recommend reading to this one as an audiobook. While it's a fairly solid memoir, JVN's personality is probably what you've come for, and certainly why you'll stay. The pacing is kind of erratic in the way it jumps around from milestone to milestone; he moves on so quickly from what feel like huge moments that you can't help but feel a little unsatisfied by the lack of reflection. I think this would be an excellent memoir if it were to be written in a few years when he has a little more time to consider how to present his story—it just feels like it was probably rushed to capitalize on the Moment, which fair enough!
