I really liked this book but I'm finding it hard to put into words the ways I liked it. It made me think. It made me change my perspective and challenged my notions of things. And it made me admit things. Plus the relationship between Emira and Briar is simply profound and then heartbreaking.

Emira, a 25yo black woman, babysits Alix (a well-to-do white woman)'s toddler daughter and shares a special bond with her. One evening, she's in a grocery store late at night with the child and is accused of kidnapping her. A young man videotapes the entire encounter and tries to get her to bring a lawsuit against the store, but Emira wants to wave it off and forget it happened. After the grocery store incident, Alix decides she needs to get to know Emira better and attempts to demonstrate repeatedly how "woke" she is, and oversteps the employer/employee relationship to an extent that Emira's not comfortable with. The young man who videotaped the encounter ends up back in Emira's life later too. Ultimately a story about racism, unconscious bias, and woke culture that was decent, but left me wanting a deeper dive into the issues.

the ideas, morals and lessons were there, all in a storyline that interested me (mega hit in my opinion) but sadly, it was the writing style that i was never able to "click" with :(

i would still recommend everybody read this book, i think people, like me, can appreciate the storyline and lessons without having a writing style that they necessarily connect with!

This one fell short for me. I really disliked Alix throughout this book and it made her narrative hard to continue through.

Great book, “bad” ending.

I really liked the book, it deals with important and current issues. The complexity of the characters pleased me a lot, however I think they both deserved more in the end.
