Interesting book about grief and what it can do to you told through the eyes of a 13-year-old boy. This book just didn't do it for me, but was short enough that I wanted to find out the end of the story. I think if I had lost someone it would have been a more important book for me to read.

Interesting little book. Definitely a quick read and a look into a child's mind dealing with grief. Despite the title it's not scary but deals more with psychological aspects. Interesting

"You do not write your life with words. You write it with actions. What you think is not important. It is only important what you do "

A Monster Calls is one of a kind book

A colleague recommended this one to me and I can honestly say that this one tugged at my heart strings. There are only few occasions that a book sucks me in and this one did. Once I started, I could not put it down. It is a beautiful written tale of a mother and a son struggling with reality that cancer is taking over her life. I connected to it at all levels – as a mother who loves my children so deeply that I would do whatever I needed to do to protect them – as a daughter who has watched my mother go through chemo and radiation fighting to stay positive and strong while she kicks cancer in the butt – as a friend who has seen one too many of my closest friends lose a parent to this awful disease. Warning… you may shed tears. I know I did.

Awesome book. I wish the movie wasn't going to be pg-13 so I could watch it with my girls after we read it but it is a very real and sad story. Makes me thing twice about life and everything that makes up our day to day. "You do not write your life with words, you write with actions." "You speak the truth". That's hard to do... especially when we lie to ourselves so much or justify our own actions. Makes me think about what lies I live and what truths I need to find. Loved this book and love that it will be a movie soon!

Spoiler' "But you know what, grandson?" his grandma said. "We do have something in common."

"We do?" Conor asked, as the hospital lurched into view down the road.

"Oh yes," his grandma said, pressing even harder on the accelerator, and he saw that her tears were still coming.

"What's that?" he asked.

She pulled into the first empty spot she saw on the road near the hospital, running her car up onto the kerb with a thudding stop.

"Your mum", she said, looking at him full on. "That's what we have in common." '

No logical analysis or review could better encapsulate my feelings towards this book than this quote. I read this book when I was 12. I am 22 now. And this book to this day devastates me just as much if not more so than when I first read it.
