A deeply pessimistic book, difficult and frustrating at points. Worth persevering with for the interesting patterning and for the way Bernhard delicately reveals the deep sadness behind Reger’s intemperance.

Reger is a grumpy old man with some questionable opinions but I did, at times, find him wryly amusing. This book did not go in the direction I was expecting either - the reason Reger asks his friend to meet him is none of the possible reasons I wondered to myself! This book won’t be for everyone, especially those who have zero tolerance for privileged white men who think everything that comes out of their mouth is absolutely correct, but to me it was more eye roll sort of nonsense than rage-inducing nonsense. There’s also a lot of repetition in this book and it is written in a stream of consciousness style, which takes a bit of getting used to.

Reminds me too much of other grumpy pretentious old men in my life who talk at me like there’s no tomorrow. Don’t feel like I’m able to give it a fair shot because of it.
