I really hated the main character. She did not make me want to root for her, even though I felt like I was supposed to. I was almost halfway through the book before the beauty pageant plot even began, so the pacing was way too slow to hold my attention. I also knew there was a movie version, and that had the perfect pacing.
Graphic: Fatphobia

I was disappointed with this book. I initially picked it up for two reasons. One, I saw the movie and I thought it was a cute story. And two, it was on the TIMES list of the 100 best YA books of all time. To be honest, I don't think this book belongs on that list. Which is too bad, the idea behind the book is great (Learning to be comfortable with who you are.). Unfortunately, that message gets lost within the large amounts of explicit language, underage drinking, relationship drama, and sex talk. Not to mention, the main character is almost as petty as those who bully her. (She does not judge to their faces, but she thinks it.) I wanted to like this book...but it definitely fell short for me.
