Didn't hold up so well over time. It was fine, but not great.

This was a reread. I remember loving this book as a teen but tbh it didn't really stack up to my adult standards. It's okay and the story rolls along quite engagingly but his depictions of women are cringe-worthy and I found some of the language made me want to get out my editing pen. Fairly average.

it's honestly just not very good
all the eddings essentialist views about gender and race and etc and none of the appeal of the belgariad

Solid fantasy novel.
Interesting world, characters and plot.
Something was missing for me though. I couldn't place my finger on what exactly, but it didn't work as well for me as most newer books. Especially the dialogues seemed a bit lacking in a way.

The main character is a great and funny one anyway, so if you're on the lookout for a new series, and already read through most of the genre, this might still be a nice change while waiting for the next favorites.

This book is mostly set up for the next books in the trilogy it felt very dated in parts.
