Review copy: ARC from publisher at ALA Midwinter

This is a fun mystery with a few twists. I don't think it's meant to be taken too seriously though. Some things are way to coincidental, but it worked for me. Because it's an ARC, the graphic novel portions weren't done yet. That was a disappointment, but from the few samples at the beginning, it looks like that part will be cool. It's a hybrid with the bulk of the text in traditional format, but graphic portions scattered throughout.

Totally unrealistic and crazy, but I couldn't put it down! This one was just a lot of fun and I definitely recommend it.

Mostly really enjoyed this book - an extra star for originality and the awesome illustrations/comics within the book. I had some issues with the ending (a little too tidy for what came before in my opinion) but it was definitely a book that kept me guessing with different twists and turns (I thought for sure I had it all figured out in chapter 2 but I was proved totally wrong not too much later which I appreciated - I hate when mysteries extend a red herring too long and then sloppily twist things up for you). For a librarian this book falls nicely into the middle school aged group - it's probably a little too immature for older high school students and some of the themes might be too scary for younger tweens (although it all depends on the tween).

Prepare for a very librarian-ish review:

I actually read this in the course of a few hours and literally couldn't put it down. It has a great mix of mystery and action that make it a super fast-paced read. It also has graphic novel pages interspersed throughout that really enhance the story. It's definitely an "early YA" novel in the level of difficulty, but I think older teen and adult readers will appreciate it too. I'll probably end up suggesting this book a lot to parents whose kids who are looking for something more advanced than J-fiction books like Diary of A Wimpy Kid, Dork Diaries, Big Nate, etc., but also to those who enjoy fast-paced, action-packed mysteries. Plus it has awesome heroines, and who doesn't love a katana-wielding princess?
