The beginning is a bit confusing, but the story gets cleared up along the way. You get to experience the same path to the truth as the main character.
I ma not a fan of the journal type of structure, but the plot distracted me so that I didn't mind it so much.

Now I know how it would feel like if I were high on lsd or magic mushrooms.
It was different, that's for sure. Different from everything I have ever read. But being different doesn't mean being special. It was a quick read, but lukewarm. With too many repetitions of words and phrases; I understand why, but that doesn't mean it wasn't annoying. And that end... Pffff

You know how there are some characters who, within the first few pages, you know you would gladly die for?

Piranesi is one of those characters. His open, eager attitude, coupled with a scientific precision and an utter humility is  incredibly charming. I would gladly have read his journal entries about his explorations of The House even without the mysterious plot simmering in the background.

On the whole, a perfectly-written book. A charming main character, a rich setting and compelling storylines. Truly an original and imaginative story.
In spite of these facts, I found that I was not very emotionally invested in the story. Perhaps it is because of the journal-entry-like POV, or the tendency of the main character to be overly calculated and precise about the subjects of his writing.
Either way, it is a fantastic read and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys a bit of "grown-up" fantasy.

I really enjoyed this book. I found that I did not want to put it down. The story is told through the journal entries of the main character. They live in a world that is made up of endless classical buildings attached to one another. There is an ocean in the basement and the sky in the upper levels. The main characters descriptions of the world are really beautiful. This is definitely a story that the less you know the better it will be the first time you read it.
