mixed bag - herron is building out a great kind of modular cast (he kills characters a lot, but not just for cheap jump scares or whatever), but hasn't quite found the handle on plotting. there's too much plot in some parts and not enough in others, but the overall vibe is a delight. like if gogol wrote spy novels. YMMV if you're not a specific kind of anglophile. i really like the aesthetic and general curdled mood of post-industrial britain. weird porridge of cynicism and shabby cosmopolitanism and good at cussing.

A sleeper cell of Russian agents. An off book meeting with an oil baron. A city wide protest against the banks. What have the Slow Horses gotten themselves into this time!?

I thoroughly enjoyed this second instalment of the Slough House series. Even though this book correlates to the second season on Apple TV, there are some noticeable differences.

What I appreciate them keeping is that we get to focus more on each of the Slow Horses and some of their strengths, some of what makes them tick.

I’m a sucker for a fast paced spy thriller, but what sets this apart is that it isn’t just that. There is the mundanity of the daily life in Slough House. The shirking of responsibilities while working, the boredom that makes people be creative. And the undertones of what really makes this a good thriller.

2 down, only 6 to go
