I found the beginning and ending bits of the book to be enjoyable. However, there was a whole middle section that slogged on and, for me didn't have enough action as I had hoped. We spent the entire time in Amy's head, and while it works sometimes, I found it to be severely annoying and distracting from the story (first person narrative woes).

I thought the summary sounded interesting so I picked the audiobook. However, I found it to be boring, dark, and slow with an overflow of gross, predictable tropes. There were some plot twists that felt obvious and could have been something else.

The entire book is a set-up for a “big reveal” you know about all along…. Because it’s listed on the back cover. Some YA books can hold an adult audience… I’m not sure this is one of them. What differentiates it from other Oz retellings is the sheer amount of gore and horror. Don’t read if you can’t stomach graphic violence. The forced “enemies to lovers” romance trope is slapdash and unnecessary, and the constant repetition of “don’t trust anyone” is tiresome and makes it difficult to commit to any of the characters. I’ll read the next book, solely because it seems to center the hero’s journey this book only unfairly teases.

I’m hooked! I love twisting up old stories and making them new. I love Dorothy living long enough to become the villain and a new girl from Kansas has to set things right. It’s still not clear who is on whose side and it’s gearing up to be a huge showdown. I can’t wait!

I think if I read Dorothy Must Die in middle school, I would’ve enjoyed it more than I did as an adult. The concept of Dorothy Gale being a tyrannical dictator is rather interesting, but I didn’t care for the world-building and “new” systems in Oz. Nevertheless, the plot was gripping enough and during the middle and end I was invested in the action.

I might continue on with the series, but I haven’t officially decided yet.

If you love twisted fairytales this one’s for you. I enjoyed the idea of this book even if the writing was basic. I understood who Amy’s character was supposed to be, and enjoyed the fact that she didn’t immediately gain an obsessive love interest.
