After suffering severe abuse at the hands of her father at the age of 14, Cara vows to never return to London, instead choosing a life women of "polite Society" would never have - freedom, adventure, excitement.

But when her father is murdered, she is forced to return to the city to deal with his estate. This means facing her past... not to mention the ostracizing looks and attitudes of the Tonne. Shortly after she returns, upper class debutantes start disappearing and being murdered. The police think Cara is connected somehow.

Meanwhile, she has also attracted the attention of the "Villainous Viscount", who both scares and arouses her. How does he fit in? Can she keep him at arms length or will she find herself succumbing to him all while trying to figure out what this new serial killer wants with her and her father's rare artifact collection?

****

Regency Romans + steampunk + mystery = a fairly enjoyable story. The bit of sex was steamy and the mystery held my attention (even if I called the murderer almost immediately upon the introduction of the character).

This was a "mind fluff" book for me - which was what I needed. And I enjoyed it enough (mostly because of the reader) that I will probably seek out more of the books in the series.

Overall an enjoyable read, but I don’t think the description does a good job of summarizing what the book is about. There’s not as much steampunk as I thought there would be, it’s more in the setting. I didn’t even realize there was a serial killer until I was about halfway through the book and I definitely wasn’t expecting the spicy scenes.

The writing is ok. I think the characters have chemistry, but their romance feels almost forced at times. Figured out who the killer was the moment they were introduced, which isn’t necessarily bad for this book anyway.

Like I said, enjoyable, enough steampunk for me to satisfy that, the spicy scenes I could do with or without, they didn’t add anything, and the mystery was fun, even if it was easy to figure out.

Not quite what I was expecting and I think the series title is a bit misleading so far, but I did enjoy it. It would have been a 5 star read if it weren't for the romance which I didn't care about. The rest was good. Hopefully in next books the romance will take a back seat to the mysteries then I'll probably really enjoy it.

Great start

Adventure, history and a little romance, what's not to like? The first book in this series was an intriguing story unlike any other I have read. I look forward to completing the series.

This book is a feast. I just can't keep myself stop reading page after page after page. I am not sure that I'm ready to read book 2 yet knowing that book 3 is still a long wait to go...

So Goodreads was overcapacity and lost my review. I think this is what I wrote... Well, I liked the characters and the concept of [book:Nefertiti's Heart|22457223], but I found the execution didn't really work for me. There was almost too much happening in the story and characters (Nan for example) were underdeveloped and certain issues were resolved too easily/quickly (Cara's past). I think the story would have worked better for me if the focus had been on the mystery and the romance had developed more slowly.
