This was an interesting read, but the humor was off. He tell you about something awful and sad and then try to make a joke (I guess to soften the blow?) but the jokes often weren't funny even aside from the fact that the timing was bad. I did chuckle a few times, but I wasn't reading this book for the humor. His goal was make this book accessible to people not all that interested in science, but I can't see that kind of person reading this book cover to cover. I feel like the author was trying to do too many things and not succeeding in any of them. The last third of the book felt tedious, but I finished it.

I really appreciate the amount of research that went into this, put as someone who really struggles with animal abuse this was a horrible reread for me. I had hoped that I had remembered wrong and it wouldn't be as bad as I was remembering, but that was wrong. It was so much worse then I remembered.

Not sure why I read this after being disappointed with Hippo Eats Dwarf!, except that it is on the shelf in the flat where I'm staying. While the information on scientific experiments can be interesting, Boese's insistence on ending each section (which is often only a few pages at most) with a one-liner is grating rather than funny. Don't force the funny.
