This is the first manga I've ever read and I absolutely loved it.
I'm intrigued by the story and the characters. I'm looking forward to what's gonna happen next!

The general premise of "Death Note" surrounds Light, a 17 year old high school student, discovering a black notebook. When he opens it the notebook he finds a few rules about the 'death note'. The book states any name written in the book will result in death as long as the writer has the face in mind. The writer can also designate a cause or a heart attack will occur. They can also state as much detail as they want surrounding the death and it will occur. Light is fascinated by his discovery and ends up meeting the Death God who dropped the book. Ryuk reveals he is bored of his Shinigami life and gave Light the book to see what would happen. Light takes on the role of vigilante by having vicious criminals die. Quickly he becomes the target of law enforcement officials across the world and an unknown man "L" is put on his tail.
The premise of the manga seems a bit complicated for a twelve issue manga. I'm not sure and it might get less complicated but for now I'm a little amazed at how much information was jam-packed into the volume. We are given almost no opportunity to like and/or side with any character because we don't know them. We are only given the opportunity to learn just how intelligent "L" and Light really are. They both continue to play a cat and mouse game where they are both the cat and the mouse depending on any one moment. It's fascinating.
I plan to continue reading the manga over the next week while I wait for more "New 52" volumes to arrive at the library. It's an interesting concept but I kind of wish it had been a bit of a slower start. I like getting to know the characters before jumping in to all of the excitement.
