Don't Look Now 4/5
An amazing thriller which kept me at the edge of my seat throughout its 50 pages.

Not After Midnight 3/5
I found this story a bit dull and slow and I can't say I liked the narrator too. However, it contained some beautiful descriptions of the Cretan landscape.

A Border-Line Case 5/5
An adventurous story which kept me slightly indifferent until I encountered a grand brilliant plot twist in the end given by Du Maurier quite masterfully!

The Way of the Cross 4/5
Containing lots of names and interaction among the characters, the story had me struggling for a while in the beginning to keep up. I liked it because it sheds light to the human flaws with originality and in the course of a nice plot as well.

The Breakthrough 3/5
This one was clearly a page-turner and fun to read, due to the creative combination of the scientific with the supernatural element. The ending was quite a bummer though.

In short, I enjoyed the collection of Du Maurier's short stories - the reason of taking me too long to finish it being that I had no access to the book for several months. I particularly liked her style and her narratives owing to the versatility that entailed them and thus I'd frankly recommend it!

Don't Look Now and Not After Midnight always haunt me, the third one I affectionately hate, the fourth one is a little dull although satisfying.

But the fifth one, The Breakthrough, always gets me. Perhaps it's the electrical engineer in me, perhaps it's the technology in medical/disability setting, perhaps it's the moral bankruptcy and ethical dilemma of capturing something you don't believe in.

It's a dark collection of short stories and a cynical outlook on human compassion, but by Jove she builds a mood so well and then subverts the expectations. No one does twisted plot twists like Daphne, and thank goodness because I barely survive each reread.

The first two short stories here are fantastic, very atmospheric and memorable. Though I can’t say the same for the others, hence the 3 star rating

A collection on of five short stories. I’d like to give my thoughts on each story at a later time, but overall I really enjoyed Daphne du Mauier’s writing. Her characters are all lifelike, her settings are atmospheric, her stories unsettling. I will definitely be reading more of her work. My favorite of this collection was either Don’t Look Now or The Breakthrough.
