I rather enjoyed it. Even though there were times where the description got long, I didn't mind it. It went by quickly and didn't seem to drag on. It's a good start for such a long series. Excited the read the rest.

Great characters and story, in a well-contained setting that nonetheless leaves plenty of intriguing mysteries to be explored. The title is far too generic for what is in truth a fantasy-political thriller.

A little dark at times for my tastes, but it crosses fewer lines than ASoIaF does. I also have to mention that every description of the Farseers makes them seem darker-skinned, which makes the bland white guys on the cover of these books even more annoying to me.

I am disappointed. I was somewhat moderately interested in the plot and the main character (and few others), but the world of The Elderlings failed to suck me in. Most of the characters are flat, bad guys have no good traits and no good motifs. Good guys are the archetype of chivalry and their only problem is lack of confidence and bad luck. Molly is so goddamn irritating. Fitz seems to only fancy her because she happens to be a female. Everyone says that Hobb is all about emotions. I did not feel much of it, and mind you, I am extremely emotional. The moment that Burrich takes the puppy away from Fitz was probably the only moment that truly touched me.
I am willing to read the rest of the trilogy, because like I said, I'm kind ofof intrested, but I really don't get the fuzz about this book. About the other series set in The Elderlings world... I'll probably pass. But let's not judge that just yet.

(4/4.5) So wonderfully immersive and melancholy, I constantly felt myself reacting viscerally to the ups and downs of the main protagonist's journey. In that regard, the first-person perspective was especially effective. The descriptions of the environments and characters was nicely detailed and never impacted the concise pacing.
