So many trigger warnings- all the trigger warnings. I did not like this book, but I also didn’t hate it. It felt like the author was adding gruesome, horrible scenes just for shock value by the end.

This book was ok.  There were definitely frustrating parts where characters acted against their development and either did things that just didn’t fit or didn’t do things that would have solved the problem before it even started.  Clearly attempting to be edgy and twisty but ended up being pretty tropey.

Book club read. Three high school friends: Angela's dead, Geo's hiding truths, and Kaiser becomes the cop who eventually arrests Geo. And oh, there's a serial killer lurking about. Warning: this is a gory book dealing with
(graphic) rape, sexual violence, abuse, murder, infidelity
. and all the works. Our MCs are as flawed as can be, cynical, hardened and rather awful people (not to mention they lie a lot).

All the relationships are kinda fucked up, though that's probably the intention. I felt for Kaiser though, he didn't deserve some of the hell he got. The thriller aspect - as disturbing and dark as it may be - great, and the twisty reveals are paced well with elements of shock. Not sure how I felt about the ending -
maybe Kai still deserved some happiness, but Geo was still a question mark for me at the end

to everyone who has recommended this book to me over the last two years, that must’ve been some kind of cruel and unusual punishment for an unknown transgression i’ve committed. i adore Karin Slaughter and Gillian Flynn and i’ve at least halfway enjoyed almost every thriller i’ve read. this takes the cake as the most unbelievable, over-the-top nonsense book i’ve ever read. i’m a big fan of unlikable and flawed narrators and characters, shoutout Karin and Gillian, but
Geo was one of the most unlikable people i’ve ever had the displeasure of reading about, real or fictional. actually, not one character in this book was likable. whatever lesson i was supposed to learn from this, i didn’t. the rapist boyfriend redemption arc was insane. also, was the mother-son rape scene necessary??? the everybody is flawed, there are no heroes and no villains lesson that Jennifer Hillier attempted to pound into my now aching head was also nonsensical. some people are just assholes.
this book was nauseating from start to finish in the worst way possible. to be succinct, this book sucks eggs and i am baffled by the overwhelmingly positive response.
