Do I rate for my enjoyment of the book or the book's educational/historical/allegorical brilliance?

The read was slow-going, frustrating at times, but I'm glad I read it. I feel smarter. My hunch is if I dig into India's history, I'd appreciate it that much more.

The historical background and the idea behind this book are really good. However, the writing is (and there is no better word to say it) extremely boring! I had high expectations, as Salman Rushdie is so acclaimed, but the experience of reading this book was very painful. It is confusing, the timelines are not well explained, a lot of Indian names and words are used that complicate the process of reading, and the main character lacks a strong personality. In sum, totally not worth it. I only finished it because I am one of those who do not give up on books.

Kartu su herojumi pradėjau nuo magijos, o pabaigiau gyvenimo realybe. Man tai istorija apie tai, kaip užaugama sudėtingomis aplinkybėmis, tokiomis kaip valstybiniai perversmai. Jei ne magija, argi galima būtų gyventi tokiame pasaulyje?

I struggled to get into it for a long time, but once I did it was worth it. Please don't give up.
