I liked this! Pleasantly surprised.

Christina is an un-mated, female wolf-shifter. Which means that not only is she low on the pack chain, she also can't shift. So when a pack all the way across the country sends out an announcement that they want female wolves to come and mate into the new pack, she figures she has nothing to lose, and at least a little to gain.

Anton has worked hard to get his pack to a stable point where they can have a home and mates - and he has sacrificed dearly for it. Damaged and scarred in the line of duty, he can't bare to saddle some hopeful young wolf with him, or worse have her reject him right after she sees his face. But an alpha's order has to be obeyed... unless he can push Christina into rejecting him first.

I think what appealed to me most was the tortured, 'unworthy' hero aspect of this - Anton was to the point where the thought no one would ever want him, and Christina was just a temptation he didn't need if she was just going to walk away eventually anyway. Watching her wear him down was an adorable story.

I like that they built their relationship and it wasn’t just insta-love. Christina was so sweet but assertive when she need to be and I loved it. I felt for Beast but I really wanted him to realize Christina was there for him.

I turned to Beast because I've loved Trent's work in the past and what's better for a restless night than a werewolf novella?

The good:

- It's a bare bones Beauty and the Beast retelling, with a physically damaged hero and an emotionally scarred heroine helping each other realize that they're worthy of love.

- Trent flips and subverts some werewolf lore and I'm here for it. Women wolves don't turn until they're mated, pregnancies aren't doomed, and while some packs are paternalistic and full of alphaholes this pack is purposefully fighting against that.

- The couples are chosen by the pack alpha instead of being the result of werewolf pheromones, another flipped trope. He has his reasons for putting people together, and by the end of the story we see why these two are a particularly good match.

The not-as-good:

- There's a bit too much story for an 88 page novella but she's setting up the world for a series so I can forgive.

This book is just the thing I needed to get my mind off everything going on in the world. For that reason, I suspect I'll be starting the next novella now-ish.
